We theoretically investigate the process of splitting two-ion crystals in segmented Paul traps, i.e. the structural transition from two ions confined in a common well to ions confined in separate wells. The precise control of this process by application of suitable voltage ramps to the trap segments is non-trivial, as the harmonic confinement transiently vanishes during the process. This makes the ions strongly susceptible to background electric field noise, and to static offset fields in the...

We describe a field-driven domain wall creep-based method for the quantification of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) in perpendicularly magnetized thin films. The use of only magnetic fields to drive wall motion removes the possibility of mixing with current-related effects such as spin Hall effect or Rashba field, as well as the complexity arising from lithographic patterning. We demonstrate this method on sputtered Pt/Co/Ir/Pt multilayers with a variable Ir layer...

We report on the observation of photogalvanic effects induced by terahertz radiation in type-II GaSb/InAs quantum wells with inverted band order. Photocurrents are excited at oblique incidence of radiation and consists of several contributions varying differently with the change of the radiation polarization state; the one driven by the helicity and the other one driven by the linearly polarization of radiation are of comparable magnitudes. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that the...

In this work we investigate electron-impurity binding energy in GaN/HfO$_2$ quantum wells. The calculation considers simultaneously all energy contributions caused by the dielectric mismatch: (i) image self-energy (i.e., interaction between electron and its image charge), (ii) the direct Coulomb interaction between the electron-impurity and (iii) the interactions among electron and impurity image charges. The theoretical model account for the solution of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger...

The effect of an external electric field F on the excitonic photoluminescence (PL) spectra of a symmetric coupled double quantum well (DQW) is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. We show that the variational method in a two-particle electron-hole wave function approximation gives a good agreement with measurements of PL on a narrow DQW in a wide interval of F including flat-band regime. The experimental data are presented for an MBE-grown DQW consisting of two 5 nm wide GaAs...

We investigate photoluminescence from a high-density electron-hole plasma in semiconductor quantum wells created via intense femtosecond excitation in a strong perpendicular magnetic field, a fully-quantized and tunable system. At a critical magnetic field strength and excitation fluence, we observe a clear transition in the band-edge photoluminescence from omnidirectional output to a randomly directed but highly collimated beam. In addition, changes in the linewidth, carrier density, and...

We report on the observation of nonlinear magneto-gyrotropic photogalvanic effect in HgTe/HgCdTe quantum wells. The interband absorption of mid-infrared radiation as well as the intrasubband absorption of terahertz radiation in the heterostructures is shown to cause a dc electric current in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. A cubic in magnetic field component of the photocurrent is observed in quantum wells with the inverted band structure only. The experimental data are discussed in...

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a multi-TeV high-luminosity linear e+e- collider under development. For an optimal exploitation of its physics potential, CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in a staged approach with three centre-of-mass energy stages ranging from a few hundred GeV up to 3 TeV. The first stage will focus on precision Standard Model physics, in particular Higgs and top-quark measurements. Subsequent stages will focus on measurements of rare Higgs processes, as well as...
